This is a follow up of the blog post: Mauritian Technopreneurs.

There was another meeting (1st one being only with Technopreneurs for the presentation of projects) “a la BOI” for the allocation of resources to the projects. This is the first time where we saw the Business Angels.

After the reserved meeting with investors only, we all gathered up (with some minutes late than actually planned) to start the allocation of projects. I was excited to know on which project I was allocated. We were given the choice to select the projects in which we wanted to work (3 projects out of 8 with no 1 being the project priority).

And the verdict came: I was allocated Project No. 2!

Euhh…OK

Time to meet the Business Angel, who is supposed to be our Captain…

F***K

The guy was simply pessimistic about the Project.

Then the decision came, after consulting the BOI facilitator to have a new Business Angel for the project. And then…..the adventure took another “tournure”!

Business Angel

We now have The New Business Angel!

The first meeting with him was held yesterday. It was a great meeting, up to the professional level! Yeah, this I can assure you.

Actually amongst all the CEOs (Mauritians specially) that I have met yet, he is the most charismatic one, I should say.

Highlights of the meeting:

Coming on time

Welcome by his personal secretary

Welcome in a very nice CEO Office – I was actually amazed by 1) the simplicity of the Office and 2) the nice view of Rose-Hill, Reduit from there

Professional Handshake creating the Halo effect

and last but not the least: the conversation.

I was stunned and pleasantly impressed by the mastery of the CEO of “The Art of Asking Questions“.

At the end of the meeting, just like I was impressed after meeting Prof. Sudarshan Jugessor (Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mauritius), I told him “It was a great honour to be working with you, Sir”.

BTW, here’s a nice pic from National Geographic Contest:

Following the:

The Board of Investment (BOI) is pleased to invite you to the 2nd edition of the Mauritius Technopreneur initiative to discuss projects that could be developed by the Mauritian Technopreneur community on the Google platform, amongst others.

we were at the BOI conference hall at around 17:00.

It was very exciting to meet the ‘Mauritian Technopreneurs’ again, after the Google Mauritius 2009 event. To refresh our memory, the Google initiatives in Mauritius was launched on 5 Nov 2008 by the Hon. Rama Sithanen.

At around 17:10, Mr. Mahen Govinda – Director International Business Services at the BOI welcomed us, we the Mauritian Technopreneurs. Mahen’s style of presentation was great and showed an example of being experienced in making presentations. With an Anglo-Mauritian English accent, he knew his audience well.

Well, as a brief summary, what I have understood is that:

1) A list of pre-selected projects have been presented to us

2) We were introduced to the term ‘Business Angel’ . Also an interesting definition of the term ‘technopreneur’ was given

3) The required profile of a technopreneur: Young at mind, Web programming skills, passion for technology etc.

4) The roadmap to the commercialization of the projects

5) We are the players trying to forge efficient techniques and in the lounge there are giants like Microsoft and Google watching us.

My personal opinion on this initiative launched by the BOI is that: “creating something out of nothing” is not as easy as pressing on a button. I had raised the issue concerning the development of mobile applications running on iPhone which requires resources like: Macbook, Developers trained on the environment, overheads etc. I am not totally convinced yet of the concept “trace tracer do avek seki to ena”. I mean if you do not have the spare parts to build an engine, despite having an MSc Automobile engineering, replacing the genuine spare parts by cheap alternatives, would not always guarantee commercial success.

For now, maybe another business meeting with the Business Angels would let us breathe “Ahaaa….that’s interesting!”

We, the Mauritian Technopreneurs, we are optimistic

This presentation is from Barcamp Ghent 2008.

It is as long as 82 slides. But you will enjoy it: Macporn!

Tim has a maximum of 86 blog posts per months. Waow. I wonder, as a freelance developer, I will reach that level one day . Anyways, his blog is very inspiring to me, personally.

Another one (but not featured on Barcamp) is on “How to build a brand, the Apple way!”

The Apple Brand Experience. You are definitely gonna love the last slide

This was a much awaited date. Friday 28 November was the deadline for essay in HRM, activity 6.5 in GEM SOCI1101 Understanding Society and last but not the least: Marketing Presentation.

a real bel bezer! Effective Time Management is required. Many Thanks to Google Calendar

I woke up early. Time to get dressed up in ‘Classic’, yes, and in Black also. Don’t believe, see for yourself:

Unfortunately, I could not print my assignments since I lacked A4 paper. Nevermind, I took my printer in the car. My primary school friend accompanied me during the trip Triolet – Reduit. Happily, we were not stuck in the traffic jam and reached uni at 08:15. Time to put on my new shoes (since I drive bare footed). The new shoes are like ‘la pate canard’ but nevertheless, very beautiful!!!!

To be able to obtain power supply for the printer, I went into the student center (common). There, could socialise a bit with prashant and co. I had the great please to be able to print my assignments and get it a spiral-binding. At the same time, offered the printing service to some of my close friends. Les filles reviewed the slides and performed a bit of formatting.

A bit of tension in the common, after solving some problems, finally got in the place where the marketing presentation of classmates had already started. In the RB lecture theater, I could witness les caisiers de winners, lolz. Gosh, I imagine the faces staring at us. Our group (les blues) sat down and started to “warm up” for the presentation.

We witnessed that a limited time slot was alloted to each member and that they were required to complete their presentation within 20 minutes, not a minute more. We appreciated some presentations when lunch time came.

Bel Nissa during lunch time. Time to take photos and play with the mic on the stage. It was very cool, we were enjoying ourselves. The following images are witness of how much fun we had:

I got the time to paste the powerpoint into the Uni laptop.

Time for presentations to resume. The respected lecturer again perform the classification of the order of groups for presenting. Luckily ours was 2 group after. We were impatient to present.

Tada……………………..

Now its our turn……..started to get on stage.

“Aler commence decorer”. We had planned to paste stickers on the whiteboard and on the table of Pepi/Mirinda posters. On the table we placed samples of QBL’s products.

I opened the powerpoint presentation. Everything going as expected.

I started: “Good Afternoon everybody”. The lecture theatre still in ‘brouhaha’. No other option than to utter: “now please shut down”. No offense was meant. Just that wanted to have the attention of everybody.

We were waiting for Green light from our lecturer and came: “You may start”. off the plane went….and we performed on the following slides:

The fun part is on slide 33. I said: “Now I will try to explain the three levels of product”…..hmmmmm (I looked at the audience)……you (pointing to prashant), “yes you……..tell me, why do you drink?”

The interactive session was hyper fun because it was unexpected.

All the slides were well presented. Our team was fabulous, an epitome of teamwork.

Well, tous est bien qui fini bien. The presentations over, we took hyper fun taking photos of the classmates who stayed till 4:30pm.

we friends, went to relax and celebrate at Shoprite, then Belle Rose, Rose Hill (Boulettes), then Quartier Militaire (Tight sleeping) and then Kentucky with Smirnoff Ice – (dr. house, dr. wilson, dr. foreman).

Finally Home sweet home on Sat. 04:00 pm. ha………..life is beautiful, isn’t?

The clock ticked 7:00 in the morning. It was high time to sit down and draft the first compilation of the marketing report.

I started by looking for some inspiration first ;D. Carefully analyzed the different format of the report and content to come up with something that fits my choice. And here we go: I easy got a table of contents containing 5 chapters. Then, time to produce another improved powerpoint presentation. My creativity and imagination were put at test. They were powered by Memogen, of course . And here we go: got astonishing powerpoint slides…

After sharing the work on MSN, time to quickly get ready now!! brick brack brack, and here we are:

It was raining. I was a bit nervous. I drove as cooly as possible with the support of Trance Music – DJ Tiesto, Club Life.

Around 12:36, I arrived at the Reduit Campus, heps, a pleasant surprise: Graduation Ceremony at the auditorium, perhaps of the Faculty of Engineering. I called the beautiful gurls.

What a nice surprise to see them, all nicely dressed. The problem was the route to QBL, Belle Rose plant, given me, tiny little me, as a novice driver has many routes to explore yet. But we managed and the gurls also managed to nicely sit in the car and enjoy the ride . It was raining, waow, it was romantic .

In less than 20 minutes, we reached our destination. Time to get ready for the big shot. I got the camera ready and took some snaps before security notified to obtain formal permission in terms of a call from manager to their watch post.

Then we were kindly invited to wait for the Marketing Manager at the Board Room. We were kindly led by the Security. The latter was curious. He wanted to know whether we are going to do placements at the plant or not. Chit chatting with him, we could observe people in the assembly line. and finally we arrived at our destination. Ouh la la, time to get settled quickly and review the questionnaire. bad lucky me, my Tie was in “disorder”:

Before:

After:

Much better now!

Finally, we saw the appearance of the Assistant Marketing Manager. The bad news: She is taken up for another meeting.

we got the opportunity to interact or socialise with her for a limited time period of say 15 minutes. It was cool. The lady was fluent in French and a bit strict and busy. She committed to answer the questions by mail et bid goodbye.

Then, unexpectedly came, the HR Manager, whose niece forms forms part of the assignment. He sat down and after socialising, he said: “posez moi vos questions!”

It was another cool, encouraging moment. We proceeded as expected. To our great surprise, we witnessed that the Manager is a Genius! He knows well about marketing theories and concepts, about Management, about Economics and a good logic and sharpness.

Indeed, it was really amazing. At the end I could not stop to compliment his extreme capabilities. We thought that given his routine is within the HR Dept., probably he would have few and not so deep understanding of Marketing concepts. But it turned out to be the contrary….It was fantastic. Hats off to the HR Manager.

In the end, he was really a gentleman: We were invited to his office (which I find a very elegant one), where in his HP Laptop (yu yu- HP), he showed us the document(s) to which he was making reference during the informal interview. Eps, we also obtained a souvenir in terms of a porte-clE.

Eihh, photo de souvenir before departure:

It was really a cool experience! we really enjoyed it and are proud of our teamwork!

Here is the result of some reading on Marketing. We have started with Marketing Mix and had done the topic Product. It was required by our Lecturer to do some reading on Brand Equity. Looking for some articles out there in the information super highway, I found this one easy to read and understand.

Ref :Harvard Business Review on Marketing;Top ten brands in the World

Review: Brand Report Card by Kevin Lane Keller.

To give managers a systematic way to think about their brands, Tuck School Professor Kevin Lane Keller lays out the ten characteristics that the strongest brands share.

The world’s strongest top ten brands share the following attributes:

1. The brand excels at delivering the benefits customers truly desire

Consider Starbucks. The company began to focus its efforts on building a coffee bar culture. It maintained control over the coffee from start to finish – from the selection and procurement of the beans to their roasting and blending to their ultimate consumption. Starbucks locations have thus have been successfully delivered superior benefits to customers by appealing to all five senses – through the enticing aroma of beans, the rich taste of the coffee, the product displays and the attractive artwork adorning the walls, the contemporary music playing in the background and even the cozy feel of the tables and chairs..

2. The brand stays relevant

Strong brands are tied to the actual quality of the products/service and to various intangible factors. Those intangibles include: user imagery – the type of person who uses the brand, the type of situations in which the brand is used, the type of personality the brand portrays etc.

Gillette, pours millions of dollars into R&D to ensure that its razor blades are as technologically advanced as possible, calling advances through sub brands (Trac II, Atra, Sensor, Mach3) and signalling minor improvements with modifiers (Altra Plus, SensorExcel). At the same time, Gillette has created a consistent, intangible sense of product superiority with its long-running ads, “The best a man can get”.

3. The pricing strategy is based on consumers’ perceptions of value

The right blend of product quality, design, features and costs and prices is very difficult to achieve but well worth the effort.

With its well-known shift to an “everyday low pricing (EDLP)” strategy, Procter & Gamble did successfully align its prices with consumer perceptions of its products’ value while maintaining acceptable profit levels.

4. The brand is properly positioned

Brands that are well positioned occupy particular niches in consumers’ minds. They are similar to and different from competing brands in certain reliably identifiable ways.

Visa is an example whose managers understand the positioning game. In the 1970s and 1980s, American Express maintained the high-profile brand in the credit card market through a series of highly effective marketing programs. Trumpeting that “membership” has its privileges, American Express came to signify status, prestige and quality.

In response, Visa introduced the Gold and Platinum cards and launched an aggressive marketing campaign to build up the status of its cards to match the American Express cards. Visa became the consumer card of choice for family and personal shopping, for personal travel and entertainment and even for international travel, a former American Express stronghold.

5. The brand is consistent

Maintaining a strong brand means striking the right balance between a continuity in marketing activities and the kind of change needed to stay relevant. Continuity means the brand’s image does not get muddled or lost in a cacophony of marketing efforts that confuse customers by sending conflicting messages.

In the 1970s Michelob ran ads featuring successful young professionals that confidently proclaimed “When you are going, it’s Michelob“. The company’s next ad campaign trumpeted “Weekends are made for Michelob“. In the mid-1980s, managers launched a campaign telling consumers that “The night belongs to Michelob“. Then in 1994 we were told, “Some days are better than others,” which went on to explain that “A special day requires a special beer“. The slogan was subsequently changed to “Some days were made for Michelob.”

After receiving so many different messages, consumers could hardly be blamed if they had no idea when they were supposed to drink the beer. Predictably sales suffered.

6. The brand portfolio and hierarchy makes sense.

Most companies do not have only one brand; they create and maintain different brands for different market segments. This philosophy led to the creation of Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Buick, Pontiac and Chevrolet divisions. The idea was that each division would appeal to a unique market segment on the basis of price, product design, user imagery and so forth.

Chevrolet has been positioned as the value-priced, entry-level brand. Saturn represent no-haggle, customer-oriented service. Pontiac is meant to be the sporty, performance-oriented brand for young people. Oldsmobile is the brand for larger, medium-priced cars.

7. The brand makes use of and coordinates a full repertoire of marketing activities to build equity.

A brand is made up of all the marketing elements that can be trademarked – logos, symbols, slogans, packaging, signage and so on. Strong brands mix and match these elements to perform a number of brand-related functions, such as enhancing or re-enforcing consumer awareness of the brand or its image and helping the product to protect the brand both competitively and legally.

Coca-Cola makes excellent use of many kinds of marketing activities. These include media advertising campaign, promotions and sponsorship. They also include direct response and interactive media. Through it all, the company always reinforces its key values of “originality” , “classic refreshment” and so on.

8. The brand’s managers understand what the brand means to consumers.

Managers of strong brands appreciate the totality of their brand’s image – that is, all the different perceptions, beliefs, attitudes and behaviors customers associate with their brand, whether created internationally by the company or not. As a result, managers are able to make decisions regarding the brand with confidence.

Gillette is very protective of the name carried by its razors, blades and associated toiletries. The company’s electric razors, for example, use the entirely separate Braun name and its oral care products are marketed under the Oral B name.

9. The brand is given proper support, and that support is sustained over the long run

Brand equity must be carefully constructed. A firm foundation for brand equity requires that consumers have the proper depth and awareness and strong, favorable and unique associations with the brand in their memory.

Tapping customers’ perceptions and beliefs often uncovers the true meaning of a brand.

A good example of lack of support comes from the oil and gas industry in the 1980s. In the late 1970s, consumers had an extremely positive image of Shell Oil and, according to market research, saw clear differences between that brand and its major competitors. In the early 1980s, however for a variety of reasons, Shell cut back considerably on its advertising and marketing. Shell has yet to regain the ground it lost. The brand no longer enjoys the same special status in the eyes of consumers who now view it as similar to other oil companies.

10. The company monitors sources of brand equity

Strong brands generally make good and frequent use of in-depth brand audits and ongoing brand-tracking studies. A brand audit is an exercise designed to assess the health of a given brand.

Conclusive Note

Hence we can see that building a strong brand involves maximising all ten characteristics. And that is clearly, a worthy goal. But in practice, it is tremendously difficult because in many cases when a company focuses on improving one, others may suffer.

Ref: Journal of Marketing Vol. 72 Jan 2008: The Readability of Marketing Journals: Are Award-Winning Articles Better Written?

Readers store information in long-tem memory, link new information to prior knowledge and use metacognition to think about and plan the learning process. Better writing propels an academic’s influence and reputation. The finest writing is often from the most distinguished researchers.

Given that the next academic year announces, we notice only 1 semester module: MGT 2217(3) Research Methodology in Management. So better warm up to produce fine and readable articles upon research. Here is an extract from one of American Marketing Association Journals to which I have access owing to the exclusive benefits of BCS student membership.

Scientific writing presents several challenges. Complex topics may require complex writing to convey accurate information, with frequent use of jargon, qualifying phrases, data, statistics, footnotes and references.

Good writing involves:

having good grammar and sentence structure

using appropriate, short and easy-to-understand words and sentences

avoiding unnecessary technical jargon

keeping the length proportionate to the likely contribution

writing for a specific audience and journal

using an interesting style with a clear and appropriate structure

Motivation and perspiration are important ingredients for good writing. One must maximise on article’s readability. Even after many drafts, authors should take a "final" draft and one last time, try to simplify, shorten and improve the structure of sentences and the manuscript as a whole. Extend the use of precise, short-sentences to improve readability. Most manuscripts and sentences can be shortened and improved.

"Consider the version of you are thinking of sending as the n-1st version. Give it to colleagues to read not only for content, but for clarity as well."

As Holbrook (1986 p.106) colorfully states "Remember that brevity is the soul of wit. In each section, paragraph and sentence of your paper, shun excessive length as diligently as you would avoid paying into extra interest expenses on your credit card. Say exactly what you need to say, no more, then stop. Like this."

Wall E is Pixar’s latest computer animated movie by the same director of Finding Nemo. The movie follows the romance between 2 robots (Wall E and EVE) in the future.

The initial idea behind WALL-E was: What if mankind evacuated Earth and forgot to turn off the last remaining robot? Wall E is the only one still truly living on Earth. And what is the ultimate purpose of living? To love. And WALL-E falls head over heels with a robot named EVE. Now, Wall-E’s feelings aren’t reciprocated because, well, she has no feelings. She’s a robot, cold and clinical. WALL-E is the one who has evolved over time and garnered feelings. So in the end, it’s gonna be WALL-E’s pursuit to win EVE’s heart, and his unique appreciation of life to become mankind’s last hope to rediscover its roots. In short, it’s going to take a robot’s love to help make the world go round.

Wall E is a movie with great visual effects, a visual endowment, and a decent science-fiction story which would please not only the children but adults as well. It is so beautiful, moving, hilarious & sad at the same time. But another aspect of the marketing of the movie is that Viral Marketing was used. According to nymag,

Pixar launched a pretty incredible fake official Website for Buy n Large, the movie’s fictitious global conglomerate responsible for turning Earth’s population into chair-dwelling, TV-addicted fatties. The site was so insidiously viral that it took us until Saturday to realize it existed. The awesome privacy policy (“By visiting the Buy n Large website you become a registered member of the Buy n Large Database. You may not unsubscribe to this database at any time”), and ads for Xanadou, the revolutionary BnL-created pill that promises to simulate a “euphoric shopping experience.”

It’s smart, funny marketing that reminds us to be skeptical of all big companies, except for Pixar, whom we now trust lovingly and unconditionally.

Another aspect of the viral marketing campaign was the creation of a video of real wall-e and it interacting with people over the streets of Los Angeles. Do watch the video here. The traditional media advertising like TV or billboards can become saturated in the near future. Already in the movie industry the magic of word-of-mouth has been existing. The Viral Marketing campaign gave life to the players in the Wall E movie.

Finally, make sure you catch WALL·E on the big screen when you can, if only as a reminder of how good it feels to love, to dream and to want something so much, you’d happily chase it from one galaxy to the next.

Finally yesterday, Wednesday 2 April, the Kotlers’ Disciples were introduced to the world!

Well, who are the Kotlers’ Disciples??? Ans: we are a wonderful team in the class of MGT 1203 Marketing Fundamentals pricipally working for the assignments given to us. We had our first assignment presented before the class yesterday and phew……it went nice. It can be downloaded for appreciation purpose by clicking here. My personal experience

I really appreciated the team spirit and team effort. Each kotler disciple was outstanding. I really feel proud to form part of the team. The last minute changes were waow….the key was: flexibility and ability to adapt to change. I feel honoured to have team members who can adapt to new situations and overcome it.

Before going to the class, I was a bit tensed. But as soon as I took a deep breath and moved before the class, it was as if, I was before my audience again. My audience was again to watch my performance. I really appreciated those many eyeballs targeted at me, my moves, my style – after a long time, I was an actor again!

I started by testing the microphone: mic test, can you hear me there? and a nod from the back confirmed it. I then introduced the team members, the powerpoint (queue) manager. I really appreciated the way he got up and greeted everybody: Good Morning. Whilst presenting the other members, I had the tendency to get the difficulty of remembering their full “official” name, given I am so used to calling them by their short name.

On presenting the product, whilst trying to differentiate margarine with butter, upon using “di berre”, I think I was funny. Still I was happy to see my audience smile. I was missing that dearly. After the Agenda, on the first slide itself, we were told that we have few minutes for the presentation and I confirmed with myself that we have to accelerate a bit, given the long no of slides.

I was hyper satisfied with everybody’s performance. angelmandini’s was a bit funny: she forgot to take her ruler to show the ideal position in the perceptual map. Nevermind, she was looking so beautiful that I could not resist being into conversative mode during her turn. She could not complete her whole content delivery, given time constraint but I really appreciate her enthusiasm and determination to explain her given topic to prepare meticulously and with a spark of good pedagogy. Special thanks to her for the pictures taken at Winners Port Louis and the pain taken to note down the prices at Spar Port Louis.

I thanked everybody for their kind attention and greeted them.

A warm, soft round of applause followed, and then our lecturer gave a small break after which the other students would do their presentation.

THE FEEDBACK from only a few students -ve ones: The slides were bulky. The presentation was too long. 1 – 2 wrong slide presenting +ve ones: The slide design was mind-blowing. Kotlers’ Disciples members have good oratory skills. I was a nice host. We were the only group to have a maximum of members presenting THE WORD OF END

I would like to sincerly thank my team members for this wonderful job. We deserve 4/5.(do not forget to mail our lecturer the self-assessment marks). I would like to humbly apologise (given the last post’s comments) if I had adopted a wrong approach as a leader. I will certainly improve for the next presentation on “planter sousou”. Let us maintain this great team spirit. This presentation, our first one at university, gave us a good experience on how to present before the class. Let us retain the lessons from it on how to improve ourselves. Let’s give our best shot again for the next assignment!

Hail Kotler’s Disciples! Long live uni life!

Often I get the question from well-wishers: “Ohh, you do freelance development, but what about your Marketing?”. In fact, ever since, my website was set-up, the Marketing process had already started and is going still strong. And with the UoM Marketing Fundamentals, I am sure, I will metamorphose in a strong Marketer! Let us define the term “Marketing” first…

Marketing deals with identifying and meeting human and social needs, briefly, marketing is “meeting needs profitably”. Marketing Management is the art and science of choosing target markets and getting, keeping and growing customers through creating, delivering and communicating superior customer value. A marketer is someone who seeks a response (attention, a purchase, a vote, a donation) from another party, called the prospect. Marketing managers seek to influence the level, timing and composition of demand to meet the organisation’s objectives.

From a managerial point of view, marketing is the process of planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion and distribution of ideas, goods and services to create exchanges that satisfy individual and organizational goals. The American Marketing Association (AMA) states, “Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.

I am a freelancer who realise the absolute importance of marketing my freelancing services in a strategic, well-planned manner. Financial success often depends on marketing ability. If I weren’t marketing myself/ my business, maybe, my new online identity would be impossible but instead maybe a risky business.

To market myself, I am currently adopting the following methods:

Creating a Remarkable Platform on which I can stand strong

My platform consists of my website (my backbone), my personality (excellent communication skills, enough technical knowledge, a good sense of timing, self-discipline and most importantly appealing and healthy) and my Management skills which I am currently developing via freelance development

Being Always in the shoes of a Marketer

I keep on giving my business cards to potential clients after a conversation trying to fit any of my solutions which would satisfy their need.

I am keen on learning Web Marketing (Search Engine Optimisation, Adwords/AdSense, DoubleClick, E-Mail, Web Analytics, Conversion rate, goals, unique visitors)

Lastly and most importantly, as I explained to a Web company and another ex-freelancer, I am currently studying at Tertiary level for a 1:1 degree and a Scholarship for a Foreign university. I am a career-oriented person and I want to reach high heights by being a respected professional in the IT industry. My freelance development is primarily to apply the knowledge learnt in the MGT/ ECON/Accounting/Law/ CSE modules and develop skills which would help to mould the shape of a professional from such a young stage. Most importantly I would earn some experience, have a rich portfolio and a five-digit bank balance!
