Mauritius Cinematography/Cameraman – a glimpse

Mauritius Cameraman

cinematographer or director of photography (sometimes shortened to DP or DOP) is the chief over the camera and lighting crews working on a film, television production or other live action piece and is responsible for achieving artistic and technical decisions related to the image. (Wikipedia). The cinematographer is responsible for the quality of the photography and the cinematic look of the film. The Director of Photography transforms the Screenwriter’s and Director’s concepts into visual images. Using his knowledge of lighting,, lenses, camera and film emulsions, the DOP creates the appropriate mood, atmosphere and visual style of each shot to evoke emotions that the Director desires. Working closely with the Director, the DOP determines the camera angles, shot composition, and camera movement for every shot.

Put simply, in Mauritian jargon, we are used with the word ‘Cameraman’. Recently, the MBC has been criticized  for broadcasting video footage of inferior quality during the ‘Journal Televise’. Maybe this is owing to the ‘cut-cost’ decision that not enough cameraman are being provided to carry out reportage?
